Telescoping

Dorsal views of the bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops and the gray fox, Urocyon cinereoargenteus, illustrate the condition of 'telescoping' found in whales. Telescoping refers to the posterior displacement of many of the bones of the facial skeleton compared to the condition seen in most mammals. For example, compare the locations of the nasal bones, premaxillae, maxillae, and frontals in the dolphin to their positions in the fox.
