Skull of Cynopterus brachyotis

Skull of Cynopterus brachyotis. The cranial bones of all bats fuse very early in development leaving few sutures. One bone that is still distinguishable is the premaxilla, which is well developed and lacks a palatal branch. The bony palate extends well beyond the last upper molar and the teeth are well suited for their function, in this case crushing fruit, with moderately flat-crowned quadrate teeth. Another important cranial characteristic is the large orbit with the postorbital process protruding from the top. The layrnx and part of the trachea are ossified in bats.
