Viewing
This applet viewer is designed to let the user view slices
through an object from three different planes: the Sagittal, Horizontal, and
Coronal planes. Index images are provided on the left hand side of
the viewer window. These index images have an attached scroller line.
The selected scroller line is green. Inactive scroller lines are red.
Drag the scroller with the mouse to scroll through the
slice images for that plane. The position of the scroller line on the
index image corresponds to the slice number of the displayed slice image.
The slice image is displayed in the upper right side of the viewer
window.
Text
There are two text areas under the slice image.
The first text area displays information about the currently selected slice:
slice number and plane, mouse position, and measuring information.
The second text window displays sample information, such as name and collection.
Zooming
Click once on the "Zoom"
button to enable zooming. Then click and drag the mouse over the section
of the slice image that you wish to enlarge. A selection rectangle will
appear, followed by the cropped and zoomed image. While zoomed, point
locating and distance measurements are enabled as are the forward one and
backward one navigation controls. To exit zoom mode, click on "Zoom
Off".
Measuring Distances
Some detailed information can be obtained from the slice image
by using mouse options. To obtain a point location press on the left
mouse button and point coordinates are displayed in the text area below.
To measure the distance between two points, press the mouse on the first point,
HOLD and DRAG the mouse to the second point and release. The text area
below will display distance information between the two points. Points and
distances are given in reference to "fossil" coordinates, where the
center of the specimen is the x, y, z coordinate point (0, 0, 0).
The "Post
Button" is enabled when a measurement or point location has been
made. Click on this button to post the data to the supplemental text page
under the Display drop list. Please note that you must copy/paste the
text from the supplemental page to another text editor before exiting the applet
in order to save it permanently.
Navigation
Navigation through the slices can be precisely controlled with
the buttons. The two buttons on the far left of the button bar provide a
means for moving forward one or backward one slice. The
middle three buttons consist of buttons to animate the slices: backward
continuous, stop, and forward continuous. Animation
works best with a high speed modem connection. See Slow Mode checkbox
below.
The "100%" button will pop up a window with a
full scale image of the currently selected slice.
The "Labels" button will pop up a window of a
labeled image of the currently selected slice, when one is available. If
the button is inactive, there is no labeled image for the current slice.
The "?" button pops up this help page.
Two additional controls are available at the bottom of the
viewer window. The Display drop list allows the user to flip
between a supplemental text page to which measurements are posted, and the
slice viewing page. The Slow Mode checkbox should be checked by any
user using a slow modem. It will disable the animation buttons to
prevent long delays for image updates.
